THE AUDIO/VIDEO CHRONICLES OF WAYNE'S Musical career HOSTED BY HIS BEST FRIEND AL
Little Rivers Run Rough: ABOUT The Recording Process
Bird and Nerd Productions 2021
1. Episodes -
Al and I began this series by recording 10 separate video “episodes” online, each one dedicated to a certain time period across the last 55+ years… high school, college, first band, second band, Chicago, LA, Melbourne, new career paths, etc….from 1965-2020. Al acted as the “host” of the episodes, asking me questions as we progressed through each time period, and adding his perspectives as a long-time friend and fellow musician.
2. Podcasts -
We were able to separately record the audio and video from those original conversations. So we took out all the “umms and uhhhs and brain fades (almost all of them Wayne’s!), and cleaned up the sound to create podcasts. These files are smaller and easier to download or stream…so if you want to listen only, no worries – you have that option. Just know that you won’t be seeing our handsome faces!
3. Codas -
After recording all of the episodes, we realized we had other memorabilia from those 50+ years that would bring the stories to life… pictures, music, and even some awards that bring extra color to the stories we told in the episodes. So we recorded a second set of videos that we called Codas. That word means “something that rounds out or concludes a piece of music or a story”. It’s the perfect word to use here…consider them to be “bonus features” with extra content and a few surprises. We kept the timeline the same for all the parts…the years covered in the Codas match the Episodes and the Podcasts.
Add it all up and the series includes 30 items to choose from…10 Podcasts,10 Episodes,10 Codas. Episodes 1-5 are available now – May 15th. The second half…Episodes 6-10…will be available on June 1st.

Lastly, Al and I decided to launch a production company in creating the series. We call it Bird and Nerd Productions titled with our respective nicknames from high school. In the same spirit of what it was like learning songs in our basements and garages in 1965, we took on the tasks of building story-lines, producing quality recordings, learning about podcasting and video editing, and of course trying to figure out how to make the product package available in the marketplace. So please bear with us as we cut our teeth and learned our way into creating what would become Little Rivers Run Rough. When we began our interview project, it didn’t actually have a name so we used Kangaroo Court as a short hand title. You’ll even hear us make references to that title in the earlier episodes. But midway through the production process, we changed our minds about the title and decided it was easier to tell you about it now than it was to scour through 20 hours of recorded videos to make repairs!
We had a blast producing the series primarily because it created the time and space needed to tell a life story and the story of a 55 year friendship which we acknowledge is not the norm in today’s disposable world. We laughed and we cried as we searched the memory banks about ambitions, ups and downs, betrayals, defining moments, and loyalty as friends across a lifetime. As Steve Martin once responded when asked, what changed when you turned 60 years old – “All of my long-range plans have become short range”. With this acknowledgment at this stage of our lives, we place Little Rivers Run Rough on full display for your enjoyment and pleasure.
